About the event
Join us for a half day foraging experience (up to 4 hours) looking not only at what plants you can forage at that time of year but how you can put some of them to use right away. The walk will look at common wild plants with edible or medicinal uses, historical uses and poisonous lookalikes aimed at beginners and helping you to get started in the world of foraging. We will also be collecting material for fire on the walk ready to make use of our gathered materials.
We will return to basecamp to build our fire with the tinder we have collected and use the fire to make something useful from what we have gathered which will vary according to the season and what we find.
When you forage in the year will greatly affect the kinds of things you are likely to find. Everything has its own season and some plants and trees may produce different edibles at different times of the year. For example, the common hawthorn can provide leaves and flowers in the early spring, and haw fruits in the dead of winter. To gain a true understanding of a local area, we recommend you visit it regularly throughout the year and as such have a variety of walks available across these key seasons.
This change of seasons will affect what our useful concoction may end up being for the second half of your course. You may end up making one of the following with us after we have foraged and built our fire:
- Herbal teas
- Seed/nut snack bars
- Wild soap
- Jams
- Pesto
- Salads
- Stews
